Fall Favorites

Fall is here! It is perhaps my favorite season to be in New England – the crisp air, the changing leaves, apple cider – so many things to love. While some years, fall is overshadowed by a long summer and an early winter, I am hoping that we have a solid few months of cool breezes, golden foliage, and chilly mornings in store.

 

Especially in Boston, an in particular in Beacon Hill, one of the best ways to enjoy the fall is just to walk around the city and admire the colors against our brick buildings, quaintest streets, and beautiful parks. Here are a few other favorite ways to enjoy the season.

Apple picking. Apples always taste better when you pick them yourself! Part of the fun is deciding which fruits are going to make it into your bag, and many orchards have a selection of apple varieties available to pick at any time during the season. Some farms also have pumpkin fields, hay rides, and cider donuts. Plus, you’ll have to make some kind of pie or crisp when you get home – yum. Here’s a round-up of some of our favorite local orchards.

Halloween. There is the fun of planning a costume, decorating the building with giant cobwebs, and the excuse to have mini-candies in the house. Now that I live in Beacon Hill, I love to sit on my stoop with a glass of wine and hand out treats to the kids — there are a huge number of kids who trick-or-treat in the neighborhood and it is so much fun to people watch and admire all the costumes! Some of the streets in Beacon Hill and Back Bay are closed to traffic on Halloween, making it safer for the littles but also creating an awesome ambiance for an evening walk.

Cozy clothes.  It’s time to rediscover your coziest sweaters and hats – I love the feeling of a soft sweater on a chilly day! Fall weather also makes me want to knit – there are so many amazing patterns and yarns available these days, and shops like Gather Here have fun classes that teach the basics. Plus, the changing weather is a fun excuse to browse the shops on Charles Street, and maybe add a few things to the wardrobe.
